Does the Volta Slap or Nah?   JR: I was looking through your essay “Learning Poetry, Unlearning God” and was really struck by your personifying your work in poetry as “building a bridge towards the divine.” It put me in mind of the homie Kaveh Akbar’s having said, “The boat that I am building will …

Descendant of the Disappointed   I am a mausoleum full of my own bones. An archive of every time I was too afraid   to kill myself. I bury another me every time the light leaves.   It’s a lonely and fruitless thing, to be and stand on all the land there is.   Could …

Seeds

In my hand an orchard lies asleep.

It lies enveloped in its pod,

as it awaits its rebirth at the call of spring.

It holds the secret of creation, a secret whispered for hundreds of generations.

I place the seeds in soil, in a land that has given birth to endless species.

Adjacent to the land sits a concrete jungle of tall buildings and apartments.

Each day I await for the sun,

to spring from the seeds a mini forest

standing tall and gracefully,

cultivating an abundance of fruit, enough to feed a village.

I watch as the fruit covered branches cast a picturesque view against the sunset sky,

providing harmony to its concrete surroundings.

There’s nothing more beautiful than gifting life to the lifeless.
